Alumnae Sarah Perry and Janelle Wienke, HandMade in America
Sarah Perry received a B.S. in Anthropology with a concentration in Sustainable Development and a minor in Spanish from Appalachian State University in 2014. She now is an intern at HandMade in America (HIA), a non-profit located in Asheville, North Carolina. HIA is a unique community economic development corporation that grows economies through craft and creative placemaking in small towns with populations of 2,000 or less in the 25 counties of Western North Carolina and the Cherokee Qualla Boundary. Since its founding in 1993, HandMade in America has been a leader and innovator in creative placemaking, a term that describes revitalization by creative initiatives that animate places and spark economic development and build sustainable and vibrant places to live, work, and play. At HIA Sarah works closely with Janelle Wienke, a former Appalachian State graduate. Janelle received a B.S. in Anthropology with a concentration in Sustainable Development and a minor in Community and Regional Planning from Appalachian State University in 2011. Janelle, a life-long participant in the arts, joined HIA in January of 2012 doing communication and now serves as the Community Economic Development Manager
