Students will be doing archaeology at the Colvard site on the South Fork of the New River in Ashe County, North Carolina. This site contains evidence of human occupation dat-ing from recent times back to at least 5000 years ago. The students will first un-dertake a ground-penetrating radar survey of the site to identify sub-surface anomalies such as hearths and structural re-mains, and perhaps evi-dence of buried surfaces. These will be investigated through subsequent exca-vation. Students will also conduct interval testing of the plow zone to deter-mine the horizontal extent and structure of the site.
