Talk: Troubling Colonial Time: Ethnographic Engagements with Shamanic, Tropical and Spirit Time in the Philippines

Dr. Christina Verano Sornito Carter to give guest lecture at Haverford College and Swarthmore College: Troubling Colonial Time: Ethnographic Engagements with Shamanic, Tropical and Spirit Time in the Philippines

In recent scholarly writings about the Philippines, trajectories in hauntology have renewed interest in the works of mid-century Filipino writer Nick Joaquin, pioneer of the genre “tropical gothic” (Joaquin 2017). Borrowing from Nick Joaquin and other artists of the postcolonial world, I take up the mantle of a “tropical gothic,” where native Visayan terms such as “mari-it” (dangerous place/enchanted), “tuyaw” (dreams from the dead), and “taglugar” (environmental spirits) describe a multiplicity of liveliness across archipelagic time and space.
