Background:

Professor Thomas R. Whyte received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Tennessee in 1988. He has been with Appalachian State University since 1989. He has published in both archaeological and biological journals. He is known best for his studies of animal remains from archaeological sites, but also has published studies involving ceramic and stone artifacts, cultural identity, and culture change.  His research has yielded 1 edited volume, over 40 articles/book chapters, 50 technical reports, and more than 50 professional papers.

Personal Bio:

Tom and Lauri Whyte live on a small farm in the Sugar Grove area west of Boone. They have two grown daughters—Sadie and Alice. Tom plays harmonica and other small instruments in two bands—the Dashboard Hula Boys and the Tom Shirley Band.
